Featuring…

At Pink Olive we are working very hard to find the best independent designers, the handmade, one of a kind, the clever, the innovative and the classic. This month, we are featuring Alan and Jennifer of Night Owl Paper Goods.

Born in Birmingham, Owlabama, Night Owl is an eco-friendly, critter-crazy, and letterpress paper goods company founded by born and bred Americans Alan and Jennifer. While maintaining its small town feel, Night Owl has managed to grow into a global, charitable company that has been featured on TV shows and publications from Alabama to Australia.

1.Where did you grow up?

Alan: Kentucky
Jennifer:
Iowa

2.What made you want to design paper goods? Is it what you’ve always seen yourself doing?

A: I’ve been a paper, stamp and envelope collector for many years and love sending and especially receiving cards in the mail.
J:
I have many answers to this question…

• I have a BFA in Graphic Design. I adore paper & love seeing design produced in multiples.

• Alan & I worked as a team together at an ad agency where we created specialty client giveaways and promotional literature.

• Alan & I purchased 2 letterpresses and became self-taught printers.

• Working in advertising became less satisfying. Growing a business from ground up became more rewarding.

• Being able to have an idea, implement it, put it out in the world & have customers clamor for it is what is sooo fun & exciting!

3.What inspires you each day?

A: Nature inspires me daily, especially the sky.
J:
Yay to our family for being a daily inspiration!!! Fanciful flowers & colorful critters are owlways an inspiration. There’s always something blooming in the south!

4.What is your favorite place to go to in NYC? Or your hometown!

Kinokuniya is a japanese bookstore in NYC. Alan and I buy tons of pens there during each trip to NYC. They have cool cards & office goodies :)

5.What is your favorite gift you have ever received?

A: The year my grandmother gave me a die-cast metal roadster with leather interior. I was obsessed with all the assembly pieces & the packaging was amazing!
J:
The first thing that comes to mind is when I received a Barbie Townhouse. My Barbies were soo cool riding in the elevator!

6.Do you have anything in the works that you would like to share with our fans?

A: More calendars!
J:
We’ll continue to grow our cast of critter characters. More aquatic & woodsy critters are in the works!
